The Story

Addictive, Smokey & Unmistakable

Juicy plum and warm vetiver unfold over a smooth cognac base, reimagined in a rich, modern blend that’s elegant, seductive, and effortlessly captivating.

Plum in Cognac 2024 is the result of a situation that we did not envision when we came up with the idea of aging our fragrance’s alcohol in wooden barrels.
After 3 or 4 cycles of aging alcohol in them, barrels get exhausted.

That is not an issue for those barrels in our collection that we purchase new (chestnut, acacia, American oak, French Oak). In all those cases we can contact the manufacturer and purchase a similar barrel with the exact same profile (same wood origin, same size, same craftsmen, same build, same charring time).

For our vintage barrels however, there is no way to know where, when and how they were manufactured.
So there is no way we can obtain aged alcohol from a second barrel that has the same olfactive characteristics as the original one.

Vintage barrels produce limited edition fragrances.

We have enough alcohol to last another year or two, but the time will come when we run out of that exquisite fragrance.

So we purchased a new vintage French oak barrel that had cognac pedigree, aged alcohol in it and diluted the original Plum in Cognac formula in it.
The result was… unconvincing. Not quite the Plum in Cognac we knew and loved, but not different and intriguing enough to make for a new scent we would be proud of.
So we got to work with perfumer Pascal Gaurin, and recalibrated the assemblage of ingredients to match the nature of the new barrel. After a few months of trial and error, Plum in Cognac Vintage 2024 was born.
In essence, from the barrel up.

More gourmand, less boozy.
More vetiver-y, less rhum-y.
Possibly easier to love, definitely as stunningly beautiful.
If you love Plum 2020, you will adore Plum 2024.

The House

Scents of Wood is an American house founded by Fabrice Croisé, a French fragrance-industry veteran who wanted wood to be the subject of a perfume, not its shadow. The name borrows from shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing. What sets the house apart is a technique few others attempt: each fragrance is composed in organic sugarcane alcohol that has been aged in a vintage wooden barrel — casks that once held bourbon, rye, cognac, calvados, or even maple syrup — so the alcohol carries a soft, faintly boozy warmth into the finished scent. The perfumes are made and aged in New York and finished in Utah, composed with a roster of accomplished perfumers; the house's Plum in Cognac took a Fragrance Foundation Award in 2021. Each bottle echoes the theme — a rounded vessel crowned with a hand-finished branch.
