The Story

Deep in a lush forest, a stunning sanctuary of water emerges like a vision, a welcome revelation. Its sheer presence is heart-stopping. This wonder attracts a symphony of fauna from nimble antelopes to graceful zebras. A hazy mist shrouds this natural oasis as if it might have been guarding it for thousands of years. This haven is mystical and dramatic, a dreamlike place that is worthy of fables and legends.

The House

Réserve en Afrique is a fragrance house based in Dakar, founded by Etienne and his wife Valeria. In 1934 Etienne’s grandfather arrived in Senegal, the same year a nearby forest became a protected reserve, and his family spent decades working on its conservation. Growing up, Etienne learned that scent was deeply tied to his experience of nature. The debut collection, Afrique Extraordinaire, celebrates African botanicals, from Madagascan vanilla and Somali opoponax to Nigerian ginger and Moroccan rose. The fragrances are PETA-listed vegan and cruelty-free, with a beetroot-derived alcohol base and upcycled ingredients. The house gives 5% of its profits to conservation nonprofits in Africa, including Nature Communautés Développement in Senegal and Madagasikara Voakajy in Madagascar.
