Main Character Fumes
by The Drydown Boutique
Hello, and welcome back to The Drydown Boutique Newsletter. August and Leo season are just around the corner, and to celebrate, August’s Scent Club theme is Main Character perfumes.
This can mean perfumes with great projection, scents that give you an extra pep in your step and a boost of confidence. It can also mean perfumes that remind you of some of your favorite main characters in media. Whatever “main character energy” smells like to you, bring them along to show and smell.
Keep reading to learn about some of our favorites available to sniff and spray right now at The Drydown Boutique!
Mulberry Fig by Floris London
notes: fig, cardamom, violet leaf, orris, vetiver, coconut, sandalwood, cedarwood, amber
perfumer(s): Penny Ellis & Nicola Pozzani
Mulberry Fig, in my opinion, smells like an extremely chic hotel. The kind of place where you’re going to be absolutely pampered. For this reason, it reminds me of one of my all time favorite main characters, Eloise, the world’s favorite Plaza Hotel dweller. I just know if we got to know Eloise as an adult she would be an unstoppable HBIC. Eloise is a character with distinct taste and sensibilities - someone who knows what she wants and exactly how to get it. Much like the person who inspired Eloise the character, Liza Minelli.
For this reason, Mulberry Fig feels like the perfect fit. Though it is definitely elegant and elevated, it has enough fig, cardamom, and coconut to keep it fun, and youthful. It’s the sort of fragrance you can get away with wearing all year and for any occasion. Much like Eloise, Mulberry Fig is just that girl!

Cirque du Soleil by Cirque du Soleil
notes: bergamot, cotton candy, red apple, iris petals, freesia, buttery popcorn, vanilla bean, sandalwood, carmelized amber
perfumer: Alexis Grugeon
This wouldn’t be a “main character” perfume list without Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil is a perfume made for and inspired by the world famous Cirque du Soleil performers and acrobats. Perfumer, Alexis Grugeon nailed the assignment!
Wearing Cirque smells like wearing caramel popcorn. It’s sweet, it’s salty, and it projects! Just to give you an idea, at The Drydown, Cirque lives a few yards away from the checkout counter and I always know when someone sprays it. This is a fragrance that knows how to make a grand entrance and how to keep its audience enraptured! Even the beautiful bottle demands to be seen. If you’re a gourmand lover, I highly recommend getting your nose on Cirque du Soleil.
Porcelain Fog by House of Brandt
notes: porcelain cup, whistling kettle, earl grey, bergamot, steamed milk, vanilla bean, lavender honey
perfumer: Jean-Charles Mignon
Formerly known as London Fog, I’m aware that Porcelain Fog is sort of an unconventional choice for a “main character” fragrance, but walk with me. Picture Diane Keaton in a Nancy Meyers movie with a steaming cup of tea in hand. Imagine your favorite protagonist in an early 2000’s rom com right at the part of the story when nothing is going their way - Vienna by Billy Joel is playing, it’s raining, but our hero(ine) is going. to. be. ok. Now try to tell me this doesn’t make sense as a main character perfume. You can’t.
Porcelain Fog is comforting, soothing, and frothy. It’s exactly what you want when you’re wrapping a cardigan tightly around yourself and sitting on your front porch as a wistful divorcee. It’s also sharp, crisp, and clear. All the things you’ll need to be to right your ship and walk into your happy ending.
Porcelain Fog is a main character perfume. Change my mind.

Ave Maria by House of Bo
notes: gardenia, cashmere, jasmine, rain, neroli, pear, oakwood, wine, leather
perfumer: Shyamala Maisondieu
Is there anything more main character energy than opening up a perfume boutique? As one of Shaya’s all time favorite fumes, it only feels fitting to include Ave Maria in this lineup. She even sits in place of pride on her own shelf at The Drydown. This is a perfume that has it all; a gorgeous bottle, beautiful sillage, and a stunning drydown.
Ave Maria is every white floral lover’s dream. It’s fresh, juicy, creamy, and ever so chic. There’s a reason Ave Maria sells out so fast!
